What is a Soffit?

A soffit is a term used to describe the underside of an architectural structure, such as the eaves, overhanging roofs, or ceilings. It is usually a horizontal or sloping surface that covers the underside of a structure and can be made of various materials like wood, metal, vinyl, or fibre cement. Soffits can serve both functional and decorative purposes. They can provide ventilation, cover unsightly features like pipes or ducts, or add architectural interest and detail to a building. In residential construction, soffits are often used to cover the underside of roof overhangs.

What is a Fascia?

A fascia (also known as “fascia board”) is a long, straight board that is attached to the lower edge of a roof, or to the ends of rafters, where they meet the outer walls of a building. It runs horizontally along the roofline, and is usually made of wood, but can also be made of vinyl, PVC, or other materials. The fascia board provides a surface for attaching gutters and also helps to protect the roof and the interior of the building from moisture damage by directing water away from the roof and into the gutters. It also adds a finished look to the edge of the roof and can be used as a decorative element in some styles of architecture. Fascia boards can be exposed or covered with a soffit to create a seamless, finished look. The fascia is a piece of wood or PVC or other material, which fits along the side of the eave to which your gutter attaches. These can be manufactured in various colours to match your house style.
